Our Classroom Website

Welcome!

With schools officially being closed, we are going to miss seeing all of the children for the next few weeks! We are all trying to figure out our next steps during this challenging time.  Right now the most important thing appears to be to practice social distancing and a lot of hand washing.  Rest assured that we are still working hard to put together a plan for you all to maintain your learning.  As always, we want it to be meaningful and purposeful so please hang in there with us as we navigate an unchartered course.  Our understanding is that remote learning will begin next week.  See below for instructions for how to sign into Google Classrooms, as this is the way we will continue learning from this point forward.  We know you have a lot of questions and so do we.  We will find out more in the next few days as we return to the building for training.  Keep checking back at this website and through the remind app for updates and upcoming assignments. You can contact us through our DOE emails: Afioriello@schools.nyc.gov  and Kforma@schools.nyc.gov.  We ask that if you do email us, please cc us both on the email.

Hoping to get back to our normal routines and to see you all soon!

<3  Mrs. Fioriello & Mrs. Forma

The Road Ahead...

We are currently working on the following:

* We are using Chapter 13 from our old GO MATH program to cover area & perimeter! (We feel Go Math provides more material and support on these topics at this time.)

* ELA: iReady Test Prep.... Reading Comprehension/Non Fiction Articles/Short Response Questions/Extended Response Questions

- Narrative Writing/Descriptive Paragraph/Word Choice

* Using R.A.C.E.S. to develop strong, clear, and detailed short responses to comprehension questions:

              R = Restate the question

              A = Answer the question

              C = Cite text evidence (2 pieces of evidence)

              E = Explain how the evidence supports your claim. (This proves that...)

              S = Sum it up (This is why...)

Some suggestions for practice at home...

- Review place value using graph paper for better organization of numbers and columns.

- Read 25 minutes daily.  Stop while reading to think about what has happened and what will happen in the story.

-Keep a writing journal at home.  Write in it as often as you like!  Occasionally, go back and read some of your previous journal entries and notice ways in which you have grown as a writer over time, using the skills and strategies we will learn throughout the year.  (Sentence structure, organization, show/not tell, transition words)

-Written responses to comprehension questions must ALWAYS be organized with full sentences!

Homework

Homework given will always reflect the day's current lessons.  It is an important reinforcement of skills learned and is intended to be purposeful, not tedious.  If your child is unable to complete the homework for any reason please send in a note to let us know.  They are responsible for maintaining a classroom log of homeworks missed and made up. Students will always have the opportunity to make up missed work.

The SplashMath code will change monthly.  We will keep it updated here:

SPLASH MATH CODE: FGOBJS

All website homework must be completed on the specific days when it is assigned.

Parents! You can download the free app called Bounce Pages.  It allows you to scan the EnVision pages with your phone to display a video that explains the lesson.  This can be helpful to both you and your child!
